I roughly know the period. I can even remember what was happening in my life around that time. But the day itself is gone. I do not remember what we did before, where we went afterwards, or what we were talking about.<\/p>\n<p>I used to think of that as an ordinary failure of memory.<\/p>\n<p>I am less sure now.<\/p>\n<p>We are entering a period in which more and more of life can be recorded. Our phones already preserve fragments of where we were, what we photographed, whom we called and what we wrote. On top of that, researchers are now working on wearable devices and personal memory systems that can turn continuous audio and visual streams into something searchable later. In 2026, research has already explored systems that could answer questions such as where you last saw your keys or what exactly someone said to you in a conversation days earlier.&sup1; &sup2;<\/p>\n<p>It is difficult to argue against the usefulness of that.<\/p>\n<p>But it also raises another question:<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happens if we no longer have to forget anything?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<hr>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"button-wrapper\" data-attrs='{\"url\":\"https:\/\/akinatilla.substack.com\/subscribe?\",\"text\":\"Subscribe now\",\"action\":null,\"class\":null}' data-component-name=\"ButtonCreateButton\"><a class=\"button primary\" href=\"https:\/\/akinatilla.substack.com\/subscribe?\"><span>Subscribe now<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<hr>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Memory was never a camera<\/h2>\n<p>Two people can walk away from the same dinner argument and describe it differently the next morning. Five years later, the differences may be even greater. One remembers a sentence the other has forgotten completely. Tone changes in memory. Some details disappear while others grow.<\/p>\n<p>That is why we often say memory is unreliable.<\/p>\n<p>It is.<\/p>\n<p>But human memory was never designed to function like a complete video archive. There is serious research suggesting that forgetting is not simply a failure, but part of how the brain adapts, allowing information that is no longer useful to recede while more relevant information remains accessible.&sup3;<\/p>\n<p>In ordinary life, the idea is easy to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Would you really want to remember every embarrassing thing you did ten years ago with the same clarity you had the day after?<\/p>\n<p>Every argument from an old relationship, complete with exact wording?<\/p>\n<p>Every hurtful sentence a friend once said, available in the original tone of voice whenever you wanted to replay it?<\/p>\n<p>In theory, that sounds more accurate.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, I am not so sure.<\/p>\n<p>Our relationship with the past is not only about remembering what happened. Over time, certain details fade, some events lose their weight, and others begin to look different because we ourselves have changed.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes that is dangerous. People can rewrite their own history in convenient ways.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes it is also how life manages to move on.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What if &ldquo;I never said that&rdquo; disappears?<\/h2>\n<p>I wonder how arguments will change.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I never said that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Yes, you did.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;No, I said something else.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Today, that is an entirely ordinary exchange. If every conversation is recorded, it could become a ten-second problem. Open the archive, find the date and play it back.<\/p>\n<p>One part of the argument would be settled.<\/p>\n<p>Would the relationship be better for it?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps we would simply develop a new habit: instead of arguing about each other&rsquo;s memory, we would argue about the record. Twenty seconds taken from a five-year-old conversation could become evidence in a disagreement happening today.<\/p>\n<p>Human relationships are not court transcripts. Not every disagreement needs to end with one side being objectively proven correct.<\/p>\n<p>That is not an argument against accuracy. In contracts, healthcare, law or any serious decision, an accurate record can be enormously valuable.<\/p>\n<p>Private life is different.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes what matters more than the precise sentence is how much space two people still want that old moment to occupy years later.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Being able to remember everything may also make it harder to leave anything fully in the past.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Forgiving is not the same as forgetting. Add ordinary conversations, location histories, school messages and eventually continuous records from wearable devices, and something changes.<\/p>\n<p>At thirty, that person may not need to remember what they were like at thirteen.<\/p>\n<p>They may be able to watch it.<\/p>\n<p>At first, that sounds wonderful. There are days from my own past I would gladly see again.<\/p>\n<p>Not all of them.<\/p>\n<p>There is something useful about being able to create distance from an earlier version of yourself. The fact that something foolish you said at seventeen is not permanently available in perfect resolution may be one of life&rsquo;s small mercies.<\/p>\n<p>As we grow older, our past becomes slightly blurred.<\/p>\n<p>Future generations may grow older while their digital past does not. It may remain there, unchanged and perfectly retrievable.<\/p>\n<p>We do not yet know what that will feel like.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Maybe choosing not to keep everything will matter<\/h2>\n<p>I am not against these technologies. On the contrary, it is easy to see how valuable memory support could be in ageing, illness or simply the chaos of everyday life. Some of the systems currently being researched are designed for exactly that: finding lost objects, recovering past conversations or helping people recall important events from the day.&sup2;<\/p>\n<p>The interesting question is not whether recording will be possible.<\/p>\n<p>It is whether <strong>forgetting will remain possible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If a device remembers on my behalf for years, who decides what is kept? If I tell it to forget something, does it actually disappear? Is only my copy deleted, while the same moment continues to exist in the recordings of everyone else who was there?<\/p>\n<p>The right to forget may not be only about our own memory.<\/p>\n<p>It may also become a question of how long we are allowed to remain in other people&rsquo;s.<\/p>\n<p>Privacy has mostly been discussed in terms of: <strong>Who can see me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Soon, another question may matter just as much:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who can remember me, and for how long?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<hr>\n<\/div>\n<p>Human beings have spent a very long time trying to strengthen memory. We wrote things down, took photographs, recorded sound, filmed video and eventually uploaded everything to the cloud. Finding ways not to forget was treated, quite reasonably, as progress.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, we may have to design the opposite as well.<\/p>\n<p>Systems that know how to let certain things disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Not only memories that can retrieve every detail, but also a way for a person to say: <em>This no longer needs to occupy space in my life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Because forgetting is not always loss.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it is simply the natural process by which something stops being important.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps one of the more unexpected privileges of the future will not be the ability to remember more.<\/p>\n<p>It will be the ability to allow some things to <strong>truly remain in the past<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"button-wrapper\" data-attrs='{\"url\":\"https:\/\/akinatilla.substack.com\/subscribe?\",\"text\":\"Subscribe now\",\"action\":null,\"class\":null}' data-component-name=\"ButtonCreateButton\"><a class=\"button primary\" href=\"https:\/\/akinatilla.substack.com\/subscribe?\"><span>Subscribe now<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<hr>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Sources<\/h4>\n<p><strong>1.
