Not simply how much of it we have, but how much of ordinary life is quietly shaped by the knowledge that it is limited.

In the world of the novel, a protocol has been developed that stops ageing. People no longer have to think about life within the natural limits we take for granted. Much of disease is under control, pain has been reduced, fear softened. It is a safer, more orderly future and, from the outside at least, a remarkably successful one.

There is nothing obviously frightening about that. Quite the opposite. Humanity has achieved a great deal of what it has wanted for a very long time.

The strange part begins afterwards

.

Subscribe now

When we postpone something today, we trust that tomorrow will be there. If not tomorrow, then next week, next month, next year. Yet underneath all that postponement sits another fact we rarely have to say aloud: our time is not unlimited.

What happens if that fact disappears?

In Eternal, something begins to change in certain people. Their memories remain intact. They know who they are, remember their past and recognise the people in their lives. But the weight of that knowledge begins to shift. Things that once mattered are still there; they simply no longer feel quite the same.

The condition is called Meaning Loss Syndrome.

The name sounds almost clinical.

What it describes is not.

Knowing that you love someone is not the same as loving them. Being able to describe the house where you grew up is not the same as feeling something when you walk through its door. If the memories remain but their emotional weight begins to change, what exactly has been lost?

That distinction became one of the parts of the novel that interested me most.

We tend to explain identity through memory. As long as we remember who we are and what has happened to us, we assume that some essential continuity remains. But perhaps a person is not simply the archive of a life. The pages we return to, the ones we avoid, what happens inside us when we see a certain face — those things may belong to identity too.

This is where Eternal moves away from science fiction in the conventional sense and towards something I find rather more unsettling.

At the centre of the novel is Dr. Sam Warren, a neuropsychologist treating people with Meaning Loss Syndrome. Sam himself is not Eternal. His wife, Elena, has undergone the Protocol. The condition he is trying to understand therefore refuses to remain safely inside the clinic, and the line between professional distance and private life becomes increasingly difficult to maintain.

I would rather stop there as far as the story is concerned. The mystery of Eternal is not simply a matter of understanding how the Protocol works, and reducing what happens to a straightforward story about a “bad system” would miss much of what interested me about it.

I kept returning instead to a different thought: Can something work perfectly and still take us somewhere we never intended to go?

In ordinary life, we tend to judge technology by the problem it solves. A disease becomes less common. Pain is reduced. A treatment works. Life expectancy increases. These are real achievements, and they are measurable.

Human life, unfortunately, is not made entirely of measurable things.

We can calculate how much longer a person lives. It is much harder to calculate whether those additional years mean more to them. We can reduce pain without necessarily knowing, at least at first, what else inside a person may have shifted with it.

That is not an argument for suffering. I do not romanticise death either. I have never found the idea that illness automatically makes people wiser particularly convincing. A person can have depth without suffering and can love without first having to lose.

Still, I find it difficult to think of everything inside us as a set of independent controls.

Fear may not be only fear. Memory is not merely information. The possibility of loss does more than make us anxious. And knowing that something will end is not always only bad news.

Sometimes endings focus our attention.

The last evening in a city is different from an ordinary evening there. When you look at a photograph of a child from years ago, you are not only looking at an old image; you also know that age will never return. It is strange how often we understand the value of something only when we realise we may not experience it again.

Perhaps the boundary of time is woven into ordinary life much more deeply than we notice.

That was what unsettled me while writing Eternal, more than eternity itself. If there is always another “later,” what happens to the weight of today? If a decision no longer feels irreversible, does it carry the same importance? How much of the value of a relationship, an ambition or a desire comes from the fact that time is scarce?

I do not pretend to know the answers. If I did, I suspect the novel would have been much less interesting to write.

This is the part of science fiction I like most. It does not have to predict the future. It can take an idea that seems reasonable, desirable, even obvious today, move it a little further forward, and allow us to look at it from a different distance.

We want to slow ageing. Prevent disease. Treat trauma. Reduce pain. Push the limits of the human body. There is nothing strange about any of that.

Perhaps the stranger assumption is that once we succeed, the questions will end there.

Some achievements do more than solve a problem. They create questions we were never in a position to ask before.

We may learn how to stop ageing. But if we make the end of time uncertain, do we remain the same?

Ebedi has been available digitally for some time, and its English edition, Eternal, is also available across digital platforms. The Turkish print edition of Ebedi is now available as well.

It is my first novel, and seeing it exist as a physical book naturally carries a different kind of feeling. But I do not want to talk about it simply because it is “my first book.” The question that bothered me when I began writing it is still the part I find most interesting now that I can hold it in my hands.

If anything, it seems even harder to dismiss:

What is eternity worth when we forget how to feel?

Get Eternal
